Ava DuVernay's adaptation of the Madeleine L'Engle novel had the budget, the cast (Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling), and the visual ambition but didn't land critically — the script struggles to translate the book's philosophical density into screen time. Storm Reid is the real find. PG at 109 minutes; fine for ages 8+, but expect kids who've read the book to be the harshest critics.
